Vintage 1950s English Electronics by Valco Tonemaster Amplifier
Here’s a fantastic vintage English Electronics Tonemaster amplifier in amazing condition! This amp came in as part of a package with a Tonemaster Lap Steel and the condition of the pairing is probably the nicest we’ve ever seen.
The Tonemaster amplifier is warm but cuts through tonally. Beautiful, original, functional, and as clean as can be. There is a spot on the handle (and on the lap steel case) that looks like an adhesive tag was pulled off. (We considered using Goo Gone but didn’t want to potentially discolor anything.) The original cover is included. (It’s very fragile and probably the rarest item here! They never survive…)
Tonemaster Amplifier
- Class A Tube Circuit: Typically built with a single-ended circuit utilizing a 12AX7 preamp tube, a 6V6 power tube, and a 5Y3 rectifier.
- Solid Pine Cabinet: Finger-jointed pine housing that was larger than a Fender Champ, giving it deeper resonance.
- Unique Visual Styling: Finished in a goldish-tan luggage fabric with a stylized Valco “V” stenciled over the metal grille screen.
- Studio Performance: Famed for warm compression, rich harmonics, and a gritty, singing overdrive when cranked
The English Electronics Tonemaster lap steel and amplifier are highly collectible pieces of mid-century Americana manufactured by Valco in Chicago during the 1950s and 1960s. They are highly prized today for their unique aesthetics and warm, overdriven vintage tones. We purchased this package from the widow of the original owner who bought it at Norman English Studio in Lansing Michigan (English Electronics was a stencil brand of Valco) and have decided to sell the items separately.
