This Valco-made, pre-war amplifier (along with its National Deluxe Model 100 sibling) was probably the fanciest and most powerful one of the time; a scarce configuration with few survivors remaining.
Our example retains among the finest condition wood cabinets we’ve seen offered. It exhibits scratches and nicks – to be expected – but the overall lustre and presentation are remarkable. Plus, how many original covers are out there?!? (Ours is included.)
We just had an expert overhaul performed: new caps, many resistors, a preamp tube socket, three-prong power cord, etc. A very slight hum remains but the tone is strong, broad, and somewhat dark. The “Microphone” input is much hotter and can produce a smooth, singing overdrive. (Using that input does raise the noise floor and microphonic tendencies of the tubes and chassis.) The original speaker is in excellent condition.
The most unfortunate condition issue is the cracked, reverse-screened glass control panel (see photos). Most of it remains intact and the backlight does work! We noticed that, at higher volumes, if the glass pieces have shifted, they will rattle slightly. Repositioning them solves the problem.
A true piece of early instrument amplification history that would be a worthy jewel in any enthusiasts collection.
