The Rockman Sustainor Model 100 is vintage analog guitar preamplifier and effects processor (this one’s from 1987 per date stamp) developed by Tom Scholz of the band Boston, known for its unique compression and singing sustain. Boston band guitar sounds can be dialed in, especially when used in conjunction with other Rockman half-rack effects like compressors and stereo choruses. A very cool vintage unit!
Features include:
- Four Mode Presets: Features two clean modes (CLN and CLN2), an “Edge” mode for subtle crunch, and a “Distortion” mode for high-gain lead tones.
- Smart Gate: A specialized noise reduction circuit that gradually engages based on output to avoid abrupt note cut-offs during long sustains.
- Auto-Clean Circuit: Allows players to control the amount of distortion directly from their guitar’s volume knob without losing tonal balance.
- Cabinet Simulation: Includes a “Phase Notcher” filter designed to mimic the frequency response of a 4×12 guitar cabinet.
- Connectivity: Features front-panel inputs and back-panel outputs, with support for external footswitches to toggle between channels and bypass the unit.
