Vintage 1970s Octave Electronics CAT SRM Synthesizer
We’re finding this Octave CAT SRM Synthesizer from the late 1970s in very good condition for its vintage. There are some light markings on the metal housing, noticeable on the logo on the pack panel and a few on the top, but not much. The 33rd key has some wear and the wood side panels show their age with various markings. This model also includes extra jacks added and labeled by the manufacturer for use with an external CAT Stick controller.
The Octave CAT SRM (Series Revision Model) is a duophonic analog subtractive synthesizer released in 1977 by Octave Electronics. It is a revised version of the original “CAT” synthesizer, notable for its powerful modulation capabilities and a unique “2-note memory” system. It was designed by Carmine Bonanno and is famous for its aggressive 24dB low-pass filter and extensive cross-modulation capabilities, which allowed it to compete with more expensive synthesizers like the ARP Odyssey and the Moog Minimoog .
Key Features of the SRM Model
- True Duophonic Playability: Unlike most duophonic synths of its time, the SRM includes separate sample-and-hold circuits for both voices. This allows two notes to be sustained simultaneously through their release phase without one note “jumping” to the pitch of the other.
- Dual-VCO Architecture: It features two Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) capable of mixing multiple waveforms (sawtooth, square, and triangle on VCO 1) simultaneously.
- Advanced Modulation: It offers extensive cross-modulation (VCO 1 modulating VCO 2 and vice versa), oscillator sync, and sub-octave oscillators for creating deep, complex textures.
- Unique Filter: Most SRM units feature the high-quality SSM2040 (Rev A) or SSM2044 (Rev B) 4-pole low-pass filter, known for its distinct, “screaming” resonance.
- LFO Enhancements: The SRM introduced an LFO delay feature and replaced the original triangle LFO with a sine wave for smoother vibrato effects.
